Beginning the 50th Year

IMG_3142I have now survived 49 full years on the planet Earth. There is no doubt that I was favoured by a lot of fortune. I was born to a good couple, who were loving and tried their damnedest to protect and prepare me. I was born several generations after my ancestors made their way to the most liberal (then) of nations. I was born in the most prosperous and peaceful time in human history to date. I was born with enough to avoid all the really horrible experiences of poverty and injustice. Continue reading

A Birthday Lament for The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I am now forty-eight. Recently, I have been struggling with a series of ideas and decisions that could change my life dramatically. I have made some decisions in that regard. Probably all the important ones are done…anyway…I remain uneasy, though, from the opposite direction. Continue reading

Birthdays and Bugs.

Cold and flu season makes travel less fun. I caught some form of infection either during or just before our flight that has manifested into a nasty head cold. So we spent our morning figuring out what medicines would give relief, they are all different here than at home in Hong Kong. Which reminds me that I should write a post later on the dramatic differences between the USA when I left 18 years ago and now. If I ever do return to reside here I am going to have some adjustments to make. Continue reading

Happy Birthday To Me

I spent the last day of  being 43 just knocking about Alice, preparing future travels, updating the blog, and doing general travel maintenance tasks. I also dined at Oscars for dinner, which is a very good restaurant in Alice, and I have come to learn the caterer behind our tour food preparation.  I had a nice Bruscetta and a Sicilian Penne, along with a “Strawberry” Dessert. The First and Second course were done very well indeed. This was a modern take on Italian fare, and as a traditionalist I may have done things different, but just for personal preference. The pasta was al dente, the bread was crisp, and the flavors and textures were all good.  The Dessert was annoying, but tasty. Annoying because  of the description, which was that it was a strawberry dish with ice cream. Turned out to be primarily ice cream garnished with maybe one whole berry. I am old school, and believe the primary ingredient should be the most abundant, no matter the cost.  Anyway, very good tucker.

After dinner I took the in movie Australia. It’s a fair film I guess; I don’t think the main actors are very skilled, so there’s that. Plus the director seemed to want to Indy Jones the thing up a bit, and that kind of spoiled the story. But the Scenery and struggle of the natives was very well done, and the fact of the war was interesting for me, a yank, to come to know.

Day done I had a nice long video chat via iChat with Henry.  Happy Birthday in truth.
